JASPER, Ala. (AP) - Walker County Sheriff John Mark Tirey has
suspended two jail employees with pay during a probe into a female
inmate's claim that she was raped by a male state prisoner.
The 43-year-old woman, held a drug charge, says she was
assaulted by the 41-year-old man who was transferred to the jail
temporarily to attend a family funeral.
The sheriff says his office is investigating whether malfunctioning equipment or employees failing to follow procedures allowed the man to enter the woman's cell early Thursday.
The woman was treated at a Birmingham clinic.
Tirey says he expects a sexual abuse warrant against the male
inmate will be signed soon and hopes to have the probe concluded by
the end of the week.
Names of the suspended employees were not released
