MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House and Senate have begun work on the state budgets for the next fiscal year.

The House debated the General Fund budget on Tuesday and will
resume that discussion on Thursday. The Senate began debate on the
education budget.

The work started later than normal because legislators were
waiting on final figures from the federal stimulus package.
Stimulus funding will cause both budgets to be larger than this
year's budgets. Without the stimulus funding, both budgets would
have been smaller.
