BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Officials at the University of Alabama
at Birmingham say they are working on a strategic plan that would
restructure the university's six schools that handle most
undergraduate education.

UAB has formed a commission that will meet next week to start
discussions of the possibilities for change.

The focus will be on the schools of business, education, engineering, arts and humanities, natural sciences and mathematics, and social and
behavioral sciences.

The university also is looking at possible administrative
cost-saving measures as it braces for further state budget cuts.

Last week, University of Alabama System Chancellor Malcolm Portera
said that he expects about 700 new job cuts systemwide over the
next 18 months.
