Legislators flip-flop on gaming task force lawyers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A committee of the Alabama Legislature has flip-flopped twice on a two-year, $250,000 contract for lawyers to represent the Governor's Task Force on Illegal Gambling.

The Legislature's Contract Review Committee met Thursday to review a contract between Gov. Bob Riley and attorneys Matt Lembke and Michael Pennington.

Democratic Sen. Roger Bedford of Russellville initially delayed approval of the contract, but then decided to let it go. Next Democratic Rep. John Knight of Montgomery delayed it, but he changed his mind later in the day. Their switches allow the governor to proceed.

Riley previously gave the lawyers two emergency contracts totaling $200,000 to represent the task force for short periods.
