MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Former Mobile County Circuit Judge Herman Thomas has been arrested and is being held at the Mobile County Metro Jail.
Thomas was arrested Friday afternoon after being indicted by a grand jury on 57 felony counts.
Thomas resigned from the bench in 2007 amid allegations that he took over other judges' cases without their knowledge, checked inmates out of jail and paddled them, and involved himself in cases where he had personal connections.
Bail for Thomas was set at $250,000.
His attorney, Robert Clark, said Thomas was the only black on the Mobile County bench and the charges were the result of racism.
Details on the indictment were not immediately available.
