BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -
The governor, who met last month with Treasury Secretary Timothy
Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, wrote a letter
to them March 5 spelling out his request.
The governor, along with a majority of the five-member county
commission, wants to refinance or restructure the debt at a fixed,
sustainable rate of interest, with the federal government providing
a form of bond insurance that is not now available in the private
Details of the letter were reported Tuesday as two county commissioners issued a news release saying a bankruptcy filing
would be the best option.
