BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) - Testimony shows a former male stripper accused in the knifing deaths of his estranged girlfriend and three other people at a home near Birmingham has a history of mental problems.

A psychiatrist testified Monday during a hearing in Jefferson County that 24-year-old Scott Lamar Abbott has a history of psychiatric treatment dating back to his childhood.

Dr. Robert Hunter Jr. said records indicate the man has been under care for several problems. Those include post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder and substance abuse.

Defense lawyers asked a judge to transfer Abbott to a state facility because of a suicide attempt, but the court refused.

Abbott is charged with capital murder in the deaths of four people in a Hueytown home earlier this month.
