MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says a 69-year-old man who had been unable to make contact with family members for more than two weeks while sailing the Gulf of Mexico has been found safe near Mobile.
Coast Guard officials said a search jet found Robert Jackson Jr. in the Gulf of Mexico about nine miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay about 10 a.m. Sunday.
Jackson had left St. Augustine, Fla., on his 45-foot sailboat on Feb. 25, heading to a new home in Slidell, La. A family member reported he had not been heard from since March 1.
Jackson said he lost his cell phone overboard sometime after March 3 and the boat's generator failed, knocking out the radio.
