Furlough plan approved for Alabama state workers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The state Personnel Board has approved
rules that will allow state agencies to furlough employees for up
to 24 days a year to deal with budget problems.

The board voted 3-0 Wednesday for the rules. The rules still
have one more step before they become final. They have to be
reviewed by the Legislative Council.

The executive director of the Alabama State Employees
Association, Mac McArthur, says he will encourage the Legislative
Council to block the rules. He says they could result in a pay cut
of nearly 10 percent for someone furloughed the maximum number of
days.

State Personnel Board member Joyce O'Neal says money saved
through furloughs could prevent layoffs, and a partial paycheck is
better than no paycheck.
