Gov. Riley targets existing manufacturing companies in Southeast

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley has started a pilot program to help existing manufacturing companies in Alabama expand.

Riley launched the Southeast Alabama Existing Industry Initiative on Tuesday. The program is overseen by the Alabama Development Office.

It will interview executives at 200 existing manufacturers in 14 counties in south and east Alabama. The survey will determine the opportunities for expansion and what the manufacturers need to do that.

Riley said it's important to target existing manufacturers because 80 percent of the new jobs in Alabama come from existing businesses.

The pilot program is focused on Barbour, Bullock, Chambers, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston, Lee, Macon, Pike, Russell and Tallapoosa counties.
