Auburn man gets 10 years for causing deadly crash

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - An Auburn man is headed to state prison after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter for causing a head-on crash that killed an off-duty Opelika police officer last year.

Corporal John William Belk III died in the Aug. 2008 collision on Sand Hill Road in Auburn.

Lee County District Attorney Nick Abbett said Monday 32-year-old Jimmy Vickerstaff Jr., also admitted leaving the scene of an accident.

Abbett said Vickerstaff was under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time of the crash. A judge ordered Vickerstaff to serve 10 years in prison.
