Former state Rep. Jim Haney died Tuesday at a Huntsville hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 78.
Haney's death was announced Tuesday afternoon on the House floor in Montgomery and House members held a moment of silence in memory of Haney. He was a Republican from Huntsville.
Haney represented a Madison County House district for 12 years before retiring in 2002.
Before his election to the Legislature, Haney worked for 35 years for PPG Industries. He was the plant manager when the company opened operations in Huntsville in 1969.
At the time of his death, Haney was a member of the Huntsville Madison County Marina and Port Authority.
