BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The last anchor store in Birmingham's
Century Plaza mall, Sears, is closing.
Sears says a liquidation sale is scheduled to start March 15
with the closing tentatively set for May 31.
It will be the last anchor store to leave the eastern Birmingham
mall that used to be a thriving retail hub. Sears opened in the
mall in 1974.
Century Plaza has been in a state of decline in recent years,
having lost all of its anchor stores except Sears. Inside the mall,
only a smattering of retailers remains.
Joe Janosko, senior general manager with the mall's owner,
Chicago-based General Growth Properties, said the firm is still
determining its response to the news and it's too early to say how
the loss of the only anchor will affect Century Plaza's future.
