BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Jefferson County coroner's office has performed an autopsy on a 23-month-old girl who died shortly after being taken to Children's Hospital in Birmingham.
The autopsy on Lakiyah Stenson, who had been in a body cast from the armpits down since December, was performed Thursday. The toddler died Wednesday.
Investigators interviewed people who lived with her in an apartment in the Collegeville public housing community Wednesday afternoon.
Detective Warren Cotton described the home as "all trashed out" and "unlivable."
Police said her mother called paramedics shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday to report that the girl was unresponsive.
Chief Deputy Coroner Pat Curry said his office is reviewing the girl's medical records.
A message left with Cotton was not immediately returned\ Thursday.
