Boy arrested for assaulting teacher

DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - A sixth-grade student accused of assaulting a Decatur school teacher faces possible criminal charges and was suspended from school.

The incident occurred Tuesday just before 8 a.m. at Brookhaven Middle School.

Phil Hastings, a school safety official, said the assault happened after several teachers broke up a fight between two boys.

Hastings said an 11-year-old boy punched and kicked a teacher several times. The unnamed teacher was treated for minor injuries.

The boy was arrested and awaits a hearing in juvenile court. The youngster was suspended from school for 10 days.
