MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Senate President Pro Tem Rodger mitherman of Birmingham says he is withdrawing his bill to put Joe Reed's name back on the basketball arena at Alabama State University.
Smitherman said Tuesday he's pulling the bill because it has the potential to divide the state Senate, and he doesn't want to do that.
Reed is a former trustee of Alabama State and is the chairman of the Alabama Democratic Conference.
The Alabama State board voted to take Reed's name off the Acadome last year because trustees said he was bringing negative publicity to the university by criticizing their actions.
Smitherman said Reed was instrumental in getting the Acadome built. But the bill immediately drew opposition from National Alumni Association President Brenda Kahn-Spells and others, who said Smitherman was usurping the power of the trustees.
