BOAZ, Ala. (AP) - State leaders will gather with friends and
family of Guy Hunt to remember the country preacher who became
Alabama's first Republican governor since Reconstruction.
A state memorial service is planned today at Snead State
Community College, followed by a funeral at the little church where
Hunt served as elder.
Hunt's body was taken to Mount Vernon Primitive Baptist Church
in Baileyton, near the former governor's home in Holly Pond. A
state trooper stood beside the coffin, which was adorned with an
American flag, as mourners filed past.
Hunt became Alabama's first Republican governor of the modern
era in 1987. He was elected to a second term but was removed from
office after jurors convicted him of ethics violations.
Hunt died Friday at the age of 75.
