Alabama National Guard has First Female General

Sheryl Gordon has been in the guard for nearly 30 years and is
the first woman to be selected for the promotion to general.

In November, Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody became the first female
four-star general in the U.S. military.

Adjutant general Maj. Gen. A.C. Blalock has worked with Gordon
several times during her career and says the guard's important step
is a reflection of society.

Gordon took command of the 62nd Troop Command in Montgomery on

She started her career there and the Fort Taylor Hardin
unit is now the state's largest with about 5,000 troops.

Now that she has taken command, the paperwork process has begun
