BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Federal grand jurors have indicted a
former police supervisor accused of stealing money from the Decatur
Police Department and staging his own disappearance.
Prosecutors said Wednesday that 48-year-old Faron White of Falkville was accused of theft from a program that receives federal funds. A police volunteer who allegedly helped White, 29-year-old Sarah Richardson, was indicated as an accessory.
White was previously jailed on a theft charge. The indictment accuses him of stealing more than $5,000 from the department.
Authorities said White staged his disappearance earlier this month to cover up the theft of thousands of dollars in confiscated drug money. He was captured at a hotel in Las Vegas.
He is due in federal court in Birmingham for a hearing on Friday.
