Woman dies in wreck with Mobile policeman

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Mobile police say a woman was killed in a traffic accident involving a police officer, who suffered a minor injury.

Corporal Charles Bagsby Junior said Tuesday a preliminary investigation shows that 54-year-old Patricia Layton Smith, driving a Jeep Cherokee, collided with 23-year-old Van Eric Petersons's patrol car at the intersections of Government Blvd. and Pleasant Valley Road.

The accident occurred at about 7 p.m. Monday. The officer, who was responding to a call, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at USA Medical Center.

The wreck is under investigation.

Bagsby said the officer was eastbound on Government Boulevard when the woman's vehicle apparently turned from a parallel service road into the patrol car's path.
