Escambia County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said it
happened Tuesday night just before 7:30 p.m. at a residence on the
Escambia-Baldwin County line.
Lambert said 16-year-old Christopher Smith and a companion were
standing next to a fire in a 55-gallon drum when it exploded.
Witnesses told deputies the blast occurred when one of the boys
poured gasoline into the drum.
Smith suffered severe burns over most of his body.
The teen died Wednesday afternoon at the University of South Alabama Medical Center.
