MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - City officials say a Foley police officer who shot a man while he was off duty outside a Pensacola bar acted in self-defense and he has returned to work.
Maurice Wiley had been on paid administrative leave since shooting 37-year-old Johnny Cloud in the parking lot of the Boomerzzz bar on Dec. 27.
Foley Police Chief David Wilson said Monday that Wiley acted properly under the circumstances.
He said Escambia County, Fla., sheriff's deputies are still investigating.
A Monday statement from police said the incident appeared to be
racially motivated and that Cloud, who is white, attacked Wiley, who is black, with a knife.
Police say Cloud used racial epithets and was shot once in the stomach.
Cloud has not been charged in the incident but officials say he could face charges when he is released from the hospital.
