AT&T: Misdialing sent Alabama jobless calls to California

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - AT&T says misdialing was to blame when calls intended for Alabama's toll-free unemployment hot line went instead to the home numbers at two California residences.

AT&T Alabama spokeswoman Sue Sperry said Monday that some callers misdialed the toll-free number for Alabama's unemployment office by one digit.

She said those calls were routed to another 800 number that was once used by a private organization. The calls were then routed to two California residents who are connected to the organization.

AT&T has contacted the third-party company that manages the toll-free line to block any misdialed calls from Alabama area codes. Sperry said the California residents are also taking steps to have the number disconnected.

Linda Jahraus of Laguna Beach said Friday that 50 or more phone calls for Alabama jobless assistance rang at her home the day after Christmas, starting at 5 a.m.
