Alabama nurse pleads guilty to health care fraud

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A former health care consultant will serve 18 months in federal prison for defrauding the Medicare Program.

62-year-old Marie Weller King was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Birmingham.

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin said from Jan. 2002 until approximately Dec. 2006, King admitted creating documents which falsely indicated physicians had approved services provided by her company, King and Associates.

Under a plea deal, King was ordered to pay $600,000 in restitution to Medicare.

She must also serve 2 years on supervised probation when she completes her prison term.
