BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Lipscomb Police Chief Conlin Payne has
pleaded not guilty to a child abuse charge stemming from a complaint filed more than a year ago.

Payne entered the plea Monday in Jefferson County Circuit Court.

The 36-year-old, who has served as chief since November 2003, has
been on unpaid administrative leave since he was arrested in
October.

Payne was indicted last month after an acquaintance's child came
to Children's Hospital with signs of physical abuse.

Authorities did not release any details of their investigation, and they did
not release the child's name or age.

Attorney Eric Guster, who is representing Payne, said the chief
looks forward to proving his innocence.

Payne remains free on $15,000 bond.
