Birmingham inspectors crack down on mail theft

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham area postal inspectors are cracking down on mail theft while urging customers to avoid sending
cash-filled cards this holiday season.

Tony Robinson, a U.S. postal inspector in Birmingham, said people send cash in the mail for convenience although they are repeatedly told not to.

Robinson said there have been a rash of mail thefts in the Birmingham area. Three arrests have been made so far. Those cases are awaiting presentation to a federal grand jury.

Robinson said he expects more arrests.

The suspected thieves aren't post office employees but workers of private companies hired to transport the mail between branches or to the main processing center.
