HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A police shooting case has been settled for $3 million dollars.
The Huntsville City Council has agreed to pay the settlement.
Rickey Lee Scheuerman claimed police officer Jeff Weaber used
excessive force in April 2003 when he shot Scheuerman three times
during a traffic stop. Weaber says he thought Scheuerman was trying
to run over him when he backed over his leg and foot while trying
to get away.
Scheuerman's case was nearing trial in Birmingham.
The Council had rejected the settlement offer last week but voted unanimously Tuesday to accept it after a meeting with its lawyer.
According to the settlement, half the payment must be made
within 30 days of acceptance with the rest to be paid by Oct. 15, 2009.
