Physicians Medical Center Carraway in Birmingham is closing down and will file for bankruptcy protection.
The board says in a statement the hospital is closing its emergency
department Monday and won't take any new patients.
The statement said the bankruptcy filing is meant "to ensure patient care and the orderly shutdown of the facility."
The hospital has about a thousand employees. It is licensed for 617 beds and staffed for about 200 beds but has had 100 or fewer hospitalized patients recently.
