FORT PAYNE, Ala. (AP) - Three men face arson charges in two separate fires in the northeast Alabama town of Powell.
Authorities said Friday that 18-year-old-old Lee McGill of Henagar and 20-year-old Brandon Johnson of Scottsboro are accused of setting fire to a vacant house on May 12. The house belongs to Powell Mayor Eugene Byrum, but officials said the case wasn't related to his position.
Another man, 25-year-old Mitchell Vincent Rigdon, is charged with arson in a blaze that destroyed an apartment building in Powell on Aug. 23. Authorities said the complex was ordered to shut down just a few days earlier for numerous code violations.
Rigdon was a volunteer firefighter at the time, and authorities said he helped fight the blaze.
The two fires were not believed to be related.
