MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Secretary of State Beth Chapman is telling the Justice Department that there was nothing improper about Alabama checking the Social Security numbers of more than 1 million voter registrations.
Chapman sent a letter to the Justice Department on Friday saying no one has been prevented from voting in Alabama because of an invalid Social Security number.
The Justice Department had asked Alabama's chief election official to explain why the state's voter registration system had checked more than 1 million Social Security numbers in the last year.
Chapman says one reason is the unusually high number of voter
registrations, as well as voters updating their registration information.
