MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The U.S. Justice Department is
threatening to sue Alabama's secretary of state over Alabama not
filing some mandatory election reports.
According to the Justice Department, Alabama didn't file reports after
the 2004 and 2006 elections about how many military and other
voters overseas applied for and cast absentee ballots.
Secretary of State Beth Chapman said the reports were not filed
by her predecessor and the information didn't exist when she took
office in 2007.
Chapman says she will file the information for the 2008 election
promptly, but she won't try to negotiate a settlement with the
Justice Department over something that occurred before her term
