Lipscomb Police Chief Charged with Child Abuse

LIPSCOMB, Ala. (AP) - Lipscomb Police Chief Conlin Payne was arrested on a child abuse charge in a Hoover police investigation
and released from the Bessemer Cutoff jail on $15,000 bond.

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies arrested the 36-year-old Payne without incident at Lipscomb City Hall about 11 a.m. Thursday
following his indictment by a county grand jury. He was freed on bond about a hour later.

Authorities said the child of an acquaintance of Payne showed up at Children's Hospital showing signs of abuse late last year or early this year.

Hoover police investigated the incident and took the case to the grand jury.

Additional details were not released. It was not immediately known if Payne has an attorney.
