3 Wiregrass Students Awarded Jimmy Rane Scholarships

MONTGOMERY, AL - Since 2000, the Jimmy Rane Scholarship Foundation has provided more than 230 students with a chance to continue their education.

Thursday night in Montgomery, the tradition continued.

Students from all across the country received scholarships, including a few students from across the wiregrass.

Dothan High School senior Ashley Ford plans to be an anesthesiologist.

"I have to go to medical school so the funds, any funds going towards my education, towards tuition, anything, housing, it will help tremendously," she said. "I mean, I need it.College is very expensive."

Abbeville High School senior Sherry Cosby plans to go to Troy University.

"This scholarship will really help me follow my dreams and become a nurse practitioner," she said. "It will really help my family and myself a lot."

Dothan High School senior John Hardin Morris wants to be a finance major.

"Right now I'm majoring in finance, but who knows how that could change, so I'm just really wanting to do something business-world, so maybe be a CFO one day."

This year's guest speaker was the NFL's all-time leading rusher, Emmitt Smith. He talked to scholarship recipients about the importance of education and how it affects their futures.
