RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Police in north Alabama say that tests on a foot believed to be from a young child determined that it was actually from a dead bear.
Authorities in Russellville spent two days searching for possible human remains after a dog showed up at home with what appeared to be the foot of a young child over the weekend.
But Police Chief Chris Hargett said forensics tests confirmed Thursday that the object is most likely the paw of a young bear. He said the paw was similar enough to a human foot to fool an orthopedic surgeon who believed it was from a child.
Hargett said he's relieved that tests show no child was harmed. But he's also baffled because there haven't been any bear sightings around the northwest Alabama town.
