MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Longtime Alabama Department of Human Resources worker Nancy Buckner has been officially named the agency's commissioner.
The DHR board voted Tuesday to hire the 56-year-old Buckner to run the agency. She replaces former director Page Walley. He resigned to become managing director of a national foundation, Casey Family Programs.
Gov. Bob Riley appointed Buckner to the position last week. Her appointment did not become final until it was approved by the DHR board Tuesday.
Buckner has worked for the state agency for 35 years. She has most recently served as assistant director of DHR in Talladega County and acting director in Calhoun County. She said her goal is to maintain and improve child welfare and other services offered by the agency despite tough economic times.
