Judge who supported school prayer dies at age 84

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Federal Judge William Hand, who issued a
1982 ruling in support of prayer in Alabama's public schools, has
died in Mobile at the age of 84.

When his ruling in support of school prayer was overturned on
appeal, a group of Christians sued to remove from classrooms
textbooks that espoused "secular humanism," which they called a
"godless religion."

Hand received that argument favorably, writing that if he was
forced to remove prayer from schools, then he must also, quote:
"purge from the classroom those things that serve to teach that
salvation is through oneself rather than through a deity." That
ruling, too, was eventually overturned.
