ARAB, Ala. (AP) - A soldier who grew up in north Alabama has been killed by a sniper in Iraq. Family members said 26-year-old Army Spec. Steven Fitzmorris was a fun-loving, free-spirited person who kept telling his mother not to worry about him.
The Army said Fitzmorris was in a Baghdad neighborhood Aug. 25 when sniper fire hit him, and he died three hours later.
His funeral was Tuesday in Columbia, Mo., where he lived with his wife and two children.
Stationed in Fort Carson, Colo., he deployed to Iraq in December for an 18-month mission. He attended Arab High School and joined the Army in January 2007.
