HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A north Alabama man whose wife died when their small plane crashed in Tennessee is listed in critical condition at Huntsville Hospital.
A Huntsville Hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday that 61-year-old Georgia Clay Hammond of Lexington remained in the intensive care unit. His wife, 55-year-old Janice Hammond, was killed in the crash just outside of the Lawrenceburg-Lawrence County Airport.
Officials say he was circling the airport before landing when the plane sputtered and crashed into a nearby corn field Saturday.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Bureau authorities are looking through wreckage to determine the cause of the fatal accident. They said the investigation thus far indicates engine failure and a nonfunctional plane prop.
