AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - An off duty Opelika police officer was killed in a head-on collision in Auburn.
Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller said 37-year-old Corporal William Belk III died at the scene of Sunday's accident. He was 37.
Police said a Jeep driven by Belk collided into a sport utility vehicle at about 2:30 p.m. on Sandhill Road.
Auburn assistant police chief Tommy Dawson said two occupants in the SUV fled the scene on foot. One man was arrested and officers are looking for another individual. No other information was immediately available about the arrests.
Alabama state troopers are handling the investigation.
