Bessemer Siblings Given Lengthy Prison Terms for Robberies

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Two siblings are headed to federal prison after each were sentenced to serve 59 years, 3 months for robbing a U.S Post Office in McCalla and a gas station/convenience store in Hueytown.

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin in Birmingham said Thursday's stiff sentences were given to 32-year-old Brad Lamont Smith and 36-year-old Christopher LaFrance Smith, both of Bessemer.

The pair were convicted in April of entering the postal facility in October 2006 where they robbed employees and customers at gunpoint. The robbery at the Crossroads BP occurred in December

Martin said the Smith brothers have an extensive criminal record which included robbery convictions in Jefferson, Tuscaloosa and Marengo counties.
