Youthful Offender Status Denied for Suspects

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Two suspects charged with capital murder in the death of a UAB student will be tried as adults. A Jefferson County judge Thursday denied youthful offender status for Maurice McCarty and Alfred Marina, both 19.

Both are on trial in the October 2007 death of 20-year-old Kayla Fanaei. The victim was found dead in her vehicle in the parking lot of Glen Iris Elementary School. A third male, 21-year-old Gregory Hill, was also charged with capital murder.

Authorities said the motive appeared to be attempted robbery.

The defendants were arrested more than two months after Fanaei was killed.
