BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Three men are being held by Birmingham police in connection with the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl apparently caught in the crossfire between two feuding groups.
Lawanda Russell died in the street near her home Monday night as her father bent over her bleeding body and tried to comfort her.
Moments earlier she had been on her porch talking to friends about getting ready for her first day as an 11th-grader at Wenonah High School.
She left to walk to a neighborhood store and a few minutes later shots rang out.
Birmingham Police spokesman Lieutenant Henry Irby said one of the men detained by police had been shot in the leg and is being held under guard in a hospital. Formal charges have not been filed.
