EUFAULA -- An audience of family, friends and fellow soldiers filled the Lakeview Resort & Conference Center in Eufaula on Saturday to honor a group of local soldiers heading overseas. They honored the men and women who will go to Afghanistan sometime in mid-October.
The Alabama Army National Guard's 1103rd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion's mission is to bring other soldiers home to their families.
More than 60 service men and women will participate in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Many soldiers said they are anxious to get there to relieve their fellow service partners.
"It's an exciting feeling," Major Kessler Weaver said. "To know that for a conflict that's been going on as long as it has, to be a part of something so great as getting our forces and our equipment and material back home, to reset and refocus on our mission of national security for the United States."
Many soldiers' families said they have the utmost respect for them, but they cannot wait to have them back home.
