Retired Army Colonel Dies in South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A retired U.S. Army colonel and former member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has died in south Alabama.

Jim Kahalley with Radney Funeral Home in Mobile said Saturday that Kenneth E. Buell died Sept. 25 at a local hospital. He was 89.

Buell graduated from West Point in 1943 and served in World War II, where he parachuted into D-Day and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He also commanded troops in Korea and Vietnam.

Buell retired in 1972 and went on to work as an executive for General Motors. He moved to Mobile in 1987.

Buell received multiple awards for his military service, including two Bronze Stars.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Stillings Buell, and eight daughters.
