MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A man is in jail and a Montgomery elementary school teacher is hospitalized after she was shot near
the school.

Police say 41-year-old Lavonetta T. Jones was shot twice outside
T.S. Morris Elementary School as she walked to her son's car
Tuesday afternoon.

Jones was transported to Baptist Medical Center South.

Police said Tuesday night her condition had been upgraded to stable and not life-threatening.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports police say 41-year-old Calvin
Massey approached Jones on the street and began arguing with her.

They say he pulled a gun and shot her in the chest and leg after
chasing her and her son.

Police say Massey is being held on $500,000 bond on two counts
of attempted murder.
