Ala. Teacher Given 15 Months in Prison for Texts

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A teacher at a Mobile alternative school will spend 15 months in federal prison on charges he sent lewd text messages to a 13-year-old female student.

Darrell La Void Tyler pleaded guilty in May to a charge of transferring obscene material to a minor. He said he began sending inappropriate text messages to the special education student in February.

The messages include solicitations for sex and pictures of his genitalia. The student's mother found the text messages and called police.

U.S. District Judge Kristi DuBose handed down the sentence Friday for the former health and physical education teacher. The state revoked Tyler's teaching license in July.
