MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama New South Coalition has endorsed Democrat Ron Sparks for governor.
The predominantly black political group met on Saturday in Montgomery to make its closely watched endorsements for the Nov. 2 election.
The coalition, a statewide organization, also endorsed Sparks in the Democratic primary.
Sparks said the primary endorsement gave him the momentum needed
to win his party's nomination and the continuing support will be a major boost for the general election against Republican Robert Bentley.
The coalition also endorsed Democratic incumbent Jim Folsom Jr. for lieutenant governor and Democrat James Anderson for attorney general.
The group traditionally conducts get-out-the vote efforts, including sample ballots for the candidates it endorses.
