Two Dothan Police officers went on trial Monday, charged with allegedly using excessive force on a woman.
The woman's attorney says her client suffers from a mental disorder.
The incident in question happened on August 15, 2006.
That's when 54-year old Pamela Borton, says Corporal Jeff Schulmerich tased her several times while she was physically restrained on a medical gurney.
She claims the alleged incident led to physical scars on her legs and injury to her face.
Dothan Police Corporal Jason Weed was also at the scene is actually the reported victim's cousin.
He's accused of not intervening.
8 jurors (5 women, 3 men) were selected for the civil case today as they listened to opening statements.
Borton's attorney, Gary Hudgins, says the plaintiff is a "sick woman" and has been for years.
Hudgins says, she is bi-polar and has a history of outbursts which led to the August incident, but it did not require the actions taken by the police.
Defense Attorney Kevan Kelly says both officers followed proper procedure and only used the taser as a last resort.
A witness described Borton's behavior that day as combative.
The jury will hear witnesses from the defendants tomorrow; officials expect to close the case by Wednesday.

This news story didn't provide enough information to come to a conclusion if the officers did indeed overstep their authority. God bless these officers for putting their lives on the line day in and day out.

As usual we just get to read/hear a SMALL tidbit of what the story is and it all could be just accusations to start with and not the FACTS. If the woman is Bi-Polar why the hell is she on the street and not in a mental facility??? Must be TOO MANY Bi-Polar diagnosed people running around free to control. So it's left up to who to control them...YEP the police. Be glad someone has to deal with these idiots and their none-caring family members.

This is another case of brutality, and no respect for humans what- so- ever. This criminals behind a uniform , and a badge they believe that they can get away with their crimes. Yes another statement. Yes they acted in accordance with the law. If that happens to any of those criminals in uniform or lawyes' family I bet they will sue to the max.
