Montgomery Cell Phone Rule Takes Effect

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A new Montgomery ordinance means that
drivers will have to put down their cell phones - at least when they're driving.

The city ordinance that makes hand-held cell phone use while driving a secondary offense took effect Sunday and officers will now begin handing out citations.

That means that if drivers are talking on their cell phones while violating other rules of the road - such as running a stop sign - they can be cited.

A public service announce-ment called "Survive the Drive" will soon start airing. And signs will go up at the major entrances to the city warning drivers not to chat and text on their cell phones while driving.
