Hobson City Looking Into Getting its Own ZIP Code

HOBSON CITY, Ala. (AP) - Hobson City could break away from Anniston and get its own ZIP code in a move that could lead to more business tax revenue.

The two cities have long shared the 36201 ZIP code.

Mayor Alberta McCrory says a lack of a unique ZIP code could have kept Hobson City from collecting its share of taxes from businesses that
deliver into the town.

The discrepancy could be confusing to companies.

The city is looking into whether to pursue making the change.

Previous mayors have also raised the issue.

Hobson City was originally a part of Oxford, but became the first incorporated black town in Alabama in 1899.

It has struggled financially in recent years, mainly due to an insuficient tax base.

The city does not have a post office.
